We *may* have a requirement to draw a control (Say a square) over a background.

The background could be a photograph. (Many different photos.)

Is it possible to blur (Gaussian blur?) the background beneath the control AND alpha blend it so the control appears to be translucent over a blurred background?

the blur effect is very performance intensive and causes a big CPU load especially on an embedded system. As such we don't implement this effect. If your UI design and the photos are predetermined, you could prepare the images by using e.g. GIMP.
